Project Monitoring & Evaluation – Principles, Tools & Reporting

Programme description & objectives

Monitoring the progress and evaluating the outcomes of projects are vital management functions that help in decision-making related to intended impacts, such as when implementation plans must be adjusted. This document serves to outline the core principles and components of Monitoring and Evaluation as well as providing guidelines, examples, and tools to utilize in formulating and carrying out an evaluation strategy. A key attribute of the program is that it is to guide project implementers in formulating and implementing an effective M&E strategy. At the end of the program, participants are expected to have fully grasped the concept of Project M&E, the decision-making platform it provides. Delegates would learn that continuous monitoring provides early indications of progress, or lack thereof, in the achievement of results, and that through periodic evaluation, they can systematically and objectively assess progress toward and the achievement of an outcome. The value of M&E would be further shown to be determined by the usefulness of the information the system delivers to the project management team and the ability to use such information for the overall project delivery.
